Instruction / Specialized Trips

Expertise and experience make for a great learning environment.

“I have been a professional guide since 2013 and worked as a class coordinator at the university level in Southeast Asia from 03-08. My students referred to me as the ‘Evil Professor’ mostly because I take what I do very seriously. I’m not an ogre, I just know that my students’ parents worked hard to pay for their education, so I wanted to give them their money’s worth. I came prepared, and I expected the same from my students. I take that same attitude when I lead a classroom of anglers and future anglers. Despite the nickname, I keep it light and try to keep everyone engaged. I know the material inside and out, so I am flexible when it comes to student needs; i.e. if a group all has some experience, we may skip over certain parts to get to the good stuff. It’s all good stuff, honestly. Come and check out what we offer at OTW for your fly fishing education. I would love to be a part of helping you to find your inner angler!”

Angler’s Choice:
These trips are geared toward learning the fundamentals.

Beginner Trip

1-angler $375
2-anglers $450
3-anglers $650

In-class & on-water. 4-hour trip from start to finish. This trip starts in the classroom where you learn how to tie your own rig. You will be able to put together a basic nymph rig, dry fly rig and dry/dropper rig by the end of the day. The second half of the trip is on the water where you get to put into practice what you learned! Great time!
*Recommended for anglers with zero to some experience.

Intermediate Trip

1-angler $475
2-anglers $550
3-anglers $750

In-class & on-water. 6-hour trip from start to finish. This trip is a little longer as we will need the time to take a more in-depth look at the basics of entomology, reading water and where to locate fish and a more in-depth look at rigging and how speed and depth play an important role in catching fish. This trip starts in the classroom and finishes on the water where we put into practice what we learned in-class.
*Must have at least one year’s worth of regular fishing and a basic understanding of the fundamentals.

Angler’s Choice

1-angler $375
2-anglers $450
3-anglers $650

In-class & on-water. 4-hour trip from start to finish. On this trip, we focus on what the angler decides. The options include focus on any of the categories below. But, we are open to ideas!
*Recommended for anglers with 2 or more years of regular fishing.
*When booking, please specify in the text box what you would like to be the focus of your day On The Water. We recommend two.

Entomology basics: identifying stages of insects and their importance in selecting the right fly pattern.

Reading water: identifying the parts of a river and where fish are likely to be found based on river conditions, weather and time of year.

Knots and rigging: learning the knots used for rigging dry, dry/dropper, and nymph rigs; learning the importance of speed, depth and making adjustments as required.

Advanced Nymphing Techniques: we study the importance of putting everything together (entomology, reading water, knots and rigging, etc.).

Euro Nymphing: We get you started on a whole new way to fool trout that is surprisingly easy and incredibly effective!

Winter Fishing Techniques: A close look at how to find and fool fish during the colder times of year. Yes, you can catch trout in the winter; they eat year-round!

Pocket Water Techniques:  “Pocket Water” is typically slower-moving water found flowing between a lot of rocks, boulders, obstructions and the like; this forms small pools or “pockets” of water where fish hide. It is technical and super fun. Focus is on shortening up the setup; accuracy and stealth regarding cast and overall presentation; bug selection relative to the conditions.  Includes a short, in-class presentation, discussion of equipment and technique as well as personal goals for the day.

Small Stream Techniques: Fishing for small fish in small streams is more than challenging. We offer a trip to fish tight, scenic water where fussy little brook trout and cutthroat hide. It’s a great time!  *We can also fish Gore Creek. Class focus is on finding fishable water; fishing smaller rigs; fly selection; short, overhead cast; roll cast. Includes a short, in-class presentation, discussion of equipment and technique as well as personal goals for the day.
